I JUST cut my hair yesterday...i had long hair, down to the middle of my back, yet just chopped it blunt all across about 1 inch past my shoulders. My hair has soo much more body and bounce and frames my face better. It's a good 'start' of going shorter. I also am contemplating REAL short or not, but am too chicken. I'd advise going gradually shorter. Your hair WILL grow back, it just might takes YEARS if it's all chopped up to grow out again! just thoughts!
go for it, if it doesnt look good, just remember this itll grow, hair never stops growing :)

just take a risk and do it. remember, hair is the biggest do-over. so even if it doesn't turn out well, u can do it all over.
Just do it. Get like a bob or an asymmetrical cut. Chances are it will turn out ok.
