Don't listen to anyone who says ';just dye it.'; It won't work and you will have wasted your time and money and more chemical exposure to your hair. Artificial tint won't lift (lighten) artificial tint that is already on the hair. You have to get a lightener (bleach or other non-bleach color remover) to get the artificial black out. Since you only want to go to a few shades lighter to a dark brown, the process should word easily. Then use a semi- demi- or permanent color to cover to a medium or dark brown. Be careful, your hair will be more porous, so it will grab a dark brown dye and make it look black, so get a color that is one or two shades lighter than what the swatch looks like. You can buy all you need at Sally Beauty Supply and the employees are trained to know what products you need. If you go to a hairdresser, he or she should have no problem making your hair 2 or 3 shades lighter. Just condition with a protein reconstructor afterward. Can hair dressers bleach JET BLACK hair dark brown?
haha I was in the hairdressers once and one of the girls that worked there tried going from black to blonde. Her boss the senior stylist had told her not to but she insisted so her boss said she would do it for her to minimise the inevitable damage.

I watched the whole thing take place and her hair looked liked straw and started to break apart. She ended up having to get hair extentions.

Just dye it hun.
Yes, bleach and then dye it. Remember the latest study says that using chemicals for dying are causes of some blood diseases (Chemical travel through hair roots to blood vessels). So be cautious.
No sorry, You are going to have to get them to bleach it and then dye it again. Thats always the bad thing about black
