Depends on the business, you should go to salons and ask for an ';informational interview'; with the manager.
The tax implications are way different. If you are paid hourly plus tips, the salon deducts and pays your income taxes and Social Security and Medicare taxes for you.
If you get a percentage of the hair cut, or get the whole amount of money and rent the chair, then you have to make your own quarterly income tax payments as well as 15% Social Security and Medicare taxes.
A Chain Salon could be a franchise, so there is no way of knowing without asking each individual salon.
